The curtain came down on the 2019 season tonight as the Angels repeated as “B” Division champs, edging the Pirates 2-1 at Cairns Field.
Congratulations to the Angels and the “A” Division champion Rangers, both winning their second in a row.

At Cairns, the Angels forced a third game by defeating the Pirates 15-1. Jason Blommaert struck out ten in the complete game win, while Dan Fortosky and Russ Schneider each had four RBI. At Dief, the Rangers beat the Wombats 11-4 to repeat as “A” Division champs. Mike Henschel pitched six solid innings for the win, while Tim Hollman led the way offensively with four hits and three runs scored.
At Leakos, the Pirates took game one of the “B” Division final with a 10-2 victory over the Angels. Jesse Rogalski went the distance for the win. Dave Fitzsimmons and Ben Flath each had a pair of RBI’s.

The “B” semi-finals ended in dramatic fashion on two fronts tonight.
At Dief, the Angels overcame a 8-3 sixth inning deficit to edge the Thunder 9-8. Jason Blommaert went the distance for the win, with Russ Schneider getting the game-winning RBI. Mark Severin and Ben Copeland each had three RBI.
At Cairns, the Pirates needed an extra inning to defeat the Bisons 8-7. Vince Shivak pitched all eight to earn the win. That sets up a rematch of last year’s division final beginning Tuesday at Leakos.
In the late game at Cairns, the Rangers drew first blood against the Wombats in the “A” final with a 9-8 victory. Jared Pike had the game winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning. Barrett Taylor got the win in relief, while Pike and Mike Henschel each had three hits.

At Dief, the Wombats scored seven runs in the second inning on their way to a 13-3 victory over the Armadillos. Yunel Ramos was the winning pitcher. Jared Ooms and Brennan Roach homered in a losing cause for the Armadillos. Game two is Thursday at Cairns Field at 6:30.
At Leakos, the Thunder drew first blood against the Angels with a 10-6 victory. Brock Hounsel had three hits and four RBI in the win. Game two is Friday at Dief.

The semi-finals began on two fronts.

In the “B” Division at Leakos, the Pirates scored six runs in the first inning on their way to a 9-6 victory over the Bisons. Jesse Rogalski went the distance to earn the win, while Vince Shivak had 3 RBI.

At Dief, the Brewers jumped out to a 13-3 lead over the Tigers, then hung on to win 14-11. Adam Sheppard picked up the win, with Boyd Bergstrom pitching the final two innings for the save. Brady Fornwald hit a 3-run homer for the Brewers. Mike Broadfoot homered for the Tigers . The Brewers will begin the semi final round Tuesday against either the Rangers or Armadillos.

At Stonebridge North, the Angels claimed a 10-1 victory over the Cardinals. Nolan Regier went the distance for the win. Russ Schneider paced the offense with four hits, three RBI and three steals.
At Meadowgreen, the Thunder beat the Skunks 13-8, with Colin Pylypow picking up the complete game win. Jordan Gerwing went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBI.
In round two, the Bisons will meet the Pirates, while the Angels will take on the Thunder.

At Stonebridge South, the Armadillos downed Northeast 12-10 in a wild game to sweep the series. The Armadillos had a 3 run lead in the bottom of the seventh before Northeast tied it up to force an extra inning. Drew Atkins had a two-run single in the top of the eighth to provide the margin of victory. Karsten Strelioff was the winning pitcher with Chad Nixey pitching the eighth to earn the save .
At Stonebridge North, the Royals scored seven runs in the second inning and hung on to defeat the Rangers 7-6 to force a third game of the series. Darren Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings of relief for the win, and also had two RBI.
At Leakos, the Wombats defeated the Selects 7-2 to force a game three in their series. Brett Suchan went the distance to earn the win.
At Dief, the Tigers forced a deciding game in their series by jumping out to a 7-0 lead and holding on to claim a 7-6 victory over the Brewers. Regan Sproule went five innings for the win, with Austin Nerbas picking up the save. Sproule also had two hits and an RBI.

At Stonebridge North, the Pirates defeated the Reds 4-2, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dave Fitzsimmons pitched six innings for the win, with Jesse Rogalski coming on to record the save. Teagan Koehler drove in two for the Pirates.
At Stonebridge North, the Thunder beat the Sabres 7-1. Mack Desautels went all seven to earn the win, scattering five hits. Brock Hounsel had a decent game, with a 3-run homer, two triples, a single and five RBI.
Game two in all series will take place Friday.

At Stonebridge North, the Brewers came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Tigers 7-5, as Brady Fornwald picked up the complete game win, helped out by two double plays from the defence. Fornwald and Marlow Knight each had two RBI For the Brewers.

The Royals won game one 6-5, as Shane Krupp picked up the win, also driving in a pair. In game two, the Royals spotted the Wombats a 7-1 lead before coming back to tie it at 7-7 before the game was called due to darkness.
At Leakos, the Pirates overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Sluggers 7-4. Vince Shivak picked up the win in relief, with Teagan Koehler earning the save.
At Stonebridge North, in a game with huge playoff implications for the Cardinals, they gained a hard fought 8-7 victory over the Bisons. Derek Mitchell went the distance to earn the win, while Randy Stevenson, Shawn Gusikoski and Billy Gherasim had key hits in the seventh to win the game.

On the nicest baseball evening of the young season, the Cubs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Pirates 6-5 at Stonebridge North. Dustin Voth went five strong innings for the Cubs, with Nolan Murray coming on to pick up the win in relief. Jordan Lysitza had the walk off hit to end the game.
At Stonebridge South, the Armadillos downed the Cannons 10-3. Chad Nixey pitched three shutout innings before Chad Schultz came on to pick up the win in relief. Luc Chen had a two-run single in the fifth inning to help break things open for the Armadillos.
At Dief, the Reds and Expos had both starters go seven strong innings, but in the end nothing was resolved as the game ended in a 5-5 tie which was called due to darkness.
At Leakos, in the first game of the double header, the Wombats outlasted Northeast 12-9. Calvin Foltz pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win, while Yunel Ramos came on for the save. Well, we’ve had warmer opening days, but the SMBL season got started this afternoon with a double header at Stonebridge South. In game one, the Northeast Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Selects 7-3 as Tyler Jones, Reid Urbanowski and Kalen Senegal led the way offensively. In the nightcap, the Rangers overcame a 4-1 deficit, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning to down the Red Sox 10-4. Mike Henschel was the winning pitcher, with Steve Pura coming on to finish the game in relief. The game was highlighted by Northeast turning a triple play in the third inning.
